Warm, Friendly, Caring…

Christ Church Anglican is a warm and caring community that has been serving God in Brampton since its inception in 1851. We are fully wheelchair accessible, having a ramp at the west door on Elizabeth Street, and an elevator in the David Jones Cloister outside the narthex. Nearby free parking is also available.

Sunday Services include a Said Eucharist at 7:45 am, a Contem-porary Eucharist at 9:00 am, and a Choral Eucharist at 10:45 am. There is a nursery for children under 3 at the 9:00 am and 10:45 am services. Sunday school classes are available for children aged 3 to 12 at both the 9:00 am and 10:45 am services. We also have occasional intergenerational special events for youth.

Baptisms are celebrated at specific dates through the year, and include preparation for sponsors, godparents, and older candidates. Application forms for baptism are available in the reception area.

Christ Church is active in community outreach, supports the Knights’ Table, Salvation Army’s Family Life Centre, Our Place Peel, and participates in Caring and Sharing at Christmas.

Not only do we have committed lay participation in all aspects of worship, we have several active fellowship groups within the parish. This includes, but is not limited to, the Parish Group and Ladies’ Fellowship Group, who meet monthly.

We hope you are encouraged by what you read within these pages, decide to learn more about us, and become more involved yourself, with our active and friendly parish community.

Rector’s Message

This fall we move into God’s future with renewed optimism, refocused vision and increased energy in witness to the Lord’s reign in our midst, across the street and around the world!

Rally Sunday saw a packed crowd for the launch of our fall programming schedule. Bishop Tom Corston of the Diocese of Moosonee, came to share with us the challenges of and the opportunities for ministry in Canada’s North, reminding us Southerners of the need for an ongoing partnership with the Council of the North. Special thanks to our Sidespeople group who coordinated and served a best barbeque ever!

I know I speak for the entire parish family when I say a special thank you to the members of our Property Committee for their splendidly coordinated renovation of both the parish hall entry and the C. Allen Johnson Auditorium. This renewed space will further our ability to serve not only our parishioners, but also the wider Brampton community through the many and varied programs and events that will take place in this space well into the future.

On September 22nd Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, and Bishop Michael Price of the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, were at Brampton’s downtown GO station to invite commuters back to church at local Anglican and Lutheran parishes. I know many of us joined these gentlemen in inviting our friends and family members for Back to Church Sunday on September 25th.

On September 28th, we kicked off another round of Christianity 101, a course designed for enquirers including those interested in receiving the sacraments of baptism and marriage at Christ Church. This course precedes preparation programs for these sacraments and is also a good stand-alone refresher for those wanting to re-familiarize themselves with the basic themes of Christianity.

Our 10:00 am Wednesday morning Eucharist continues, followed at 11:00 am by a time of study. This fall, we examine Scot McKnight’s book, The Jesus Creed: Loving God, Loving Others, based on Jesus’ summary of the law. This book offers its readers practical day-to-day ways to love God with heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love neighbour and self. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the church office. You are welcome to attend this study, even if you have not had an opportunity to read the passage for a given Wednesday.

This fall we celebrate our new and renewed musical leadership with Andre Rakus (organist and choir master) and Sally Campbell (praise team leader) who will once again lead us in musical praise and worship of almighty God. We extend our sincere congratulations to Andre and family as we thank God for the safe arrival of Rachel Julia Rakus on September 11th.

As we continue to journey forward into the future that God has planned for us, let us remember to trust, to pray and to listen, with all our hearts, as we discern where our Lord is calling us.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, their labour is in vain who build it.” (Psalm121)

Advisory Board Update

The following is an abridged summary of some of the items discussed at the September 20, 2011 Advisory Board meeting. Rev. Byron opened the meeting with a devotional.

Financial Report

A new format for the financials was presented after much work by Thomas. This is a result from his work to clarify QuickBooks and the reports that are provided from this accounting application. More refinements are being worked on to add in the budget information.

The preliminary August 2011 year to date numbers were presented and discussed (see summary on page 11). In summary, general offerings are inline with givings this same time period a year ago and are down about $4,000 from the budgeted amount.

On an expense side the single biggest difference is salaries with a positive variance of $18,000 as a result of delayed hiring. A new income line is being added showing the income from Our Faith, Our Hope funds. Initial payment is expected in November 2011 with quarterly payments thereafter for 5 years.

Property Committee

The new parking pad and curb has finally been installed at 18 Elizabeth Street. This was put on hold last year due to the weather. Further landscaping work is in place and on-going. Outstanding issues with regard to the interior are to be brought forward to the next meeting of the Property Committee so that a plan can be put in place address outstanding issues over the summer. Paul is attending the Property meetings as scheduled.

The Property Committee has been very busy this summer on the downstairs renovations. Work is mostly complete and items on the deficiency list were addressed during September. A quote for the outside Elizabeth Street office entrance doors has been received. The Property Committee needs to review plan and funding.

Byron expressed his thanks to all involved in the project. It is exceptionally wonderful to walk into the hall, which is full of life. Congratulations to the Property Committee who had a vision and worked to implement it with little disruption.

Staffing

Members of the Corporation are currently interviewing candidates for the vacancies of the Children, Youth and Family position and Pastoral Care position. The interviewing panel includes the Rector (Rev. Byron), the Rector’s Warden (Karen Harper), the People’s Warden (Holly Adam), with Joan Powell and Andrea White represented Lay Leaders in Pastoral Care and Children’s Ministries, respectively.

Laying on of Hands

Is anyone among you sick? Then they must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick -- James 5:14-15 (NAS)

At Christ Church we offer this anointing on the first Sunday of each month at the time of the Eucharist to any who are struggling with physical or emotional distress. Please take advantage of this beautiful, ancient practice.

Around the Sanctuary

October’s Banner

Worked on by Joan Hunter, its Thanksgiving theme features a large candle emitting rays of light, with fruits and flowers at its base.

November’s Banner

Designed and made by Cherri Brock Moote and Nancy Taylor, and assisted by the late Mrs. Brock (Senior), it shows a cross with broken poppies at its base, and the dedication, for all the Saints.

Group Updates

Choir Director Update

As you read this message we will be drawing closer to the date of the Big Sing. This event will feature a massed choir of 1,000 voices, the Massed Pipes and Drums of The Highland Creek Band, the North York Temple Band of the Salvation Army, Colm Wilkinson from the Phantom and Les Miserables, and a special guest choir from the UK. Also, I will be their guest organist for the event.

The choir and anyone else who are interested can participate in this exciting event. It will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 7:00 pm at Roy Thomson Hall. Please note that we have already been practicing for this event during our choir practices which are held in the church sanctuary on Thursdays, starting at 7:30 pm. This is not just a sing-along, those who would like to participate will be part of a Massed Choir, so becoming familiar with the music is essential.

With December only about two months or so away, please also make note of the following important dates:

·        Sunday December 4th at 4:00 pm - Choral Evensong

·        Sunday December 18th at 4:00 pm - Festival of Lessons and Carols

·        Saturday December 24th - Christmas Eve Services with our Choir and Organ at 9:00 pm and 11:00 pm

I mention these dates since these are important events in the life of our parish community, and our dedicated and hard-working choir is putting together something extra special for these dates in addition to what they already do to make our worship beautiful. I also mention these dates because as Advent approaches, perhaps someone out there would like to be a part of these exciting services.

Perhaps you or someone you know would like to experience what it is like to be a part of something great. How wonderful it is to be able to help make our worship beautiful, to learn more about singing and music in general, and at the same time meet wonderful people and make friendships. If you agree I invite you to come and sing in our choir for the Advent/Christmas Season, to experience this, and see if this is something that would interest you. In order to best benefit from this I would highly recommend that you start with us in early November, so that you will be better prepared for what we will be singing in December.

To borrow from Dofasco Steel in Hamilton, "Our product is making beautiful music in praise of God. Our strength is in our people." I am always pleased to receive inquiries from potential members of the Choir, so feel free to speak to me. As well, if there is anyone out there in the congregation who plays a musical instrument, I would be interested in meeting with you.

Wishing you all a blessed Thanksgiving.

In Christ,

-- Andre Rakus

Altar Flowers

With the passing of our amazing summer, we eagerly look forward to Harvest Sunday and Thanksgiving weekend.

Our church is beautifully decorated rejoicing in the bountiful harvest our Lord has given us with fruits, vegetables, preserves, fall floral arrangements, etc. These donations are then given to one of our Outreach Ministries.

Thank you in advance for your usual generosity of gifts for the displays as we enjoy the Harvest and Thanksgiving Season and the opportunity of thanking God for the many blessings He has given us.

Christmas Tree Bazaar

Our Annual Christmas Tree Bazaar will be held on Saturday November 12, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Are you interested in working behind the scenes? We are always looking for people to help set up and take down the bazaar, decorate, man the tables or in any other way that you may wish to help. If you think that you can help, please contact Kathy Newbert.

But if you can't help, make sure that you invite all your friends and neighbours! We look forward to seeing you at the Bazaar for some shopping and lunch.

-- Kathy Newbert (Bazaar Coordinator)

Christmas Tree Bazaar Conveners

Yes, it is that time of year again! The first meeting of the Bazaar convenors was held on Monday, September 26th at 7:30 pm at the Church. Keep your eyes open for the next meeting.

I am also looking for anyone that is interested in being involved – please do not hesitate to contact me at home.

-- Kathy Newbert

Joint Coffee Time

A time of fellowship is held between the 9:00 am and 10:45 am services.  If you have the gift of hospitality and would be willing to host a Sunday Coffee Hour, please let us know. Truly, many hands make light work!

Hosting involves providing juice, milk and cream. We do have cookies in the freezer. Either of the Jean’s will assist with starting the coffee, and cleaning up after coffee hour is completed. Your assistance is what makes this all possible.

For those folks attending the 10:45 am service, why not come a wee bit earlier and enjoy a coffee before the service? We’d love to see you!

A sign-up sheet is now available at the Parish Office. We look forward to working with you

The Pilot and the Priest

A priest dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who's dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket and jeans.

Saint Peter addresses this cool guy, "Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?"

The guy replies, "I'm Jack, retired airline pilot from Houston."

Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the pilot, "Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom." The pilot goes into Heaven with his robe and staff.

Next, it's the priest's turn. He stands erect and booms out, "I am Father Bob, pastor of Saint Mary's for the last 43 years."

Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the priest, "Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom."

"Just a minute," says the good father. "That man was a pilot and he gets a silken robe and golden staff and I get only cotton and wood. How can this be?"

"Up here - we go by results," says Saint Peter. "When you preached - people slept. When he flew, people prayed."

Community Outreach

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35)

The hungry, the thirsty and the strangers do not disappear in the summer and neither did the outreach initiatives at Christ Church. Over the summer months, parishioners at Christ Church responded generously to a number of specific needs. We had two special offerings: one in July for the Pakistan Mission trip; and the other on Rally Sunday in response to guest preacher The Right Rev. Thomas Corston, Bishop of Moosonee. Collectively, these special offerings raised close to $6,000.

Additionally, while not billed as a fundraising initiative, the Annual Christ Church and Grace United Golf Tournament was able to direct close to $700 to Regeneration. Regeneration operates out of Grace United and serves the marginalized in downtown Brampton. Last year their breakfast program (runs Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 10:00 am) served 18,500 breakfasts! More information on Regeneration can be found on their website (www.regenbrampton.com). In keeping with local outreach, $700 was provided by individual parishioners for clergy discretionary use. These funds are used for emergency food, medical, transportation, educational and child-related expenses. We have been able to assist with threatening utility realities and other foreseen difficult circumstances. These are a daily need.

By Harvest Sunday, two more events will have been held with great participation by our parish family. These include a Fall Fashion Show presented by BramGrans supporting The Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign, and Ride for Refuge with funds be directed to Regeneration.

Even more is in the works! On Saturday, October 22nd we are thrilled to present the Canadian mystery musical Colours in the Storm as remounted by the Toronto Arts and Letters Club under the skilled direction of our very own Nancy Kee. This lively show depicts the mystery surrounding the death of Canadian painter Tom Thomson – you will not be disappointed! Proceeds from this performance are to be directed to Our Place Peel that provides residential and support services to at-risk youth in Peel. It is Peel’s only emergency shelter for youth aged 16 to 21 who serve 550 youth each year in its four programs. More information can be found on their website (www.ourplacepeel.org).

And… on Friday, November 18th we will welcome to Christ Church the Georgetown Bach Chorale for their Brampton debut. They will be presenting Handel’s timeless oratorio The Messiah with proceeds to be directed to local outreach in time for the Christmas needs.

Something else to consider… we are aware of at least two parish families that when entertaining over the summer asked their guests to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the local food banks. Christmas and New Year’s comes with much entertaining… a small gesture such as this will gladden hearts.

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)

Primate's World Relief and Development Fund Update

PWRDF is responding to the drought and famine in the Horn of Africa with an initial donation of $75,000 to support work in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, sent through the ACT Alliance and The Canadian Foodgrains Bank. More donations are needed as conditions spread and worsen.

A Three Cantors concert at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary in June raised more than $5,000 for Slave Lake relief after wildfires destroyed much of the community.

Ongoing support is being provided for food/agricultural relief in Haiti.

An area of concern close to home is the terrible treatment of migrant farm workers from outside the country who work in Ontario. Conditions are not much better than those portrayed in the Stratford production of The Grapes of Wrath (from the novel by John Steinbeck) about the dust bowl on the American prairies and the inhumane treatment of workers. Several groups are working to propose the setting of standards for conditions for migrant workers.

Your support is always gratefully received.

-- Gloria Watts

Where IS the Safest Place?

1.      Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.

2.      Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.

3.      Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.

4.      Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation.

5.      Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in Hospitals. So, above all else, avoid hospitals.

You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at Church!

And Bible study is safe too! The percentage of deaths During Bible study is even less.

So, attend church and read your Bible - IT WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!

Holy Humour

There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country.

The lady answered, "Only the Ten Commandments."

Sunday School

Now that summer is over and fall is upon us we mark the start of another year of Sunday school. This fall we will be continuing with our multiclass approach adopted in January. During the 9:00 am service we will have three Sunday school classes: Junior (ages 3 to 5), Intermediate (ages 6 to 7) and Senior (ages 8 to 12). The classes coincide with the following grades at school: Junior (preschool to Senior Kindergarten), Intermediate (grades1 and 2), and Senior (grades 3 to 7). During our 10:45 am service we will once again have one Sunday school class for all ages.

Registration

Parents, once again this year I would remind you that a new registration form needs to be filled in for each child who will be attending Sunday school. We require a new form each year as required by church policy. Forms can be picked up on Sundays from me or during the week from Martha. The form is also available on the church website in the youth section. Please return the form to the church as soon as possible.

Teachers

This year we are once again looking for Sunday school teachers, especially for the 10:45 am service. We are blessed at Christ Church to have a growing Sunday school program, a core group of teachers and increasing Ministry needs. We have said good bye to a few of our regular 10:45 am teachers as they have decided to take a sabbatical from our Sunday school program to explore other ministry opportunities. If anyone is interested in joining our Sunday school team please speak with me.

Children’s Activities

Christmas Play

We are also planning another children’s Christmas play. If anyone in the congregation would like to assist in this endeavor please let me know. Putting on a production requires a great deal of time and effort, so if anyone has any special gifts or would just like to come and help we welcome your assistance. This year we are opting to have rehearsals for the play outside of the regular Sunday school time slot. Stay tuned for more information in the near future.

Children’s Praise Team

Does your child play and instrument or like to sing? Under the guidance of Sally Campbell a Christ Church Children’s Praise Team is being formed.  Rehearsals will be a couple of hours once a month.  If your child is between the ages of 6 and 13 and is interested in the Children’s Praise team, please let me know and I can provide you with further information.

Further Information

If you require further information about our Sunday school program or would like to assist in any capacity please contact me.

-- Andrea White

Christ Church Youth

During the first half of this year there was interim youth programming, for both the junior and senior youth for ages 10 to 18. Youth Groups present an opportunity for Christian youth to be able to spend time together and have fun. In a nutshell youth groups provide fun, faith, friends, and usually a little food!

As we are currently in the midst of hiring a new person to mange and run the youth programming there is currently no activities available outside of the Sunday school program mentioned above. If you are looking for something to do in the church, please talk to John Hall about joining the ranks of the Servers group. This is an opportunity to see the service like you never have before.

Having said all that, if you have a passion for an event and would like help to get it off the ground, please feel free to talk to Stan Szepesi, Andrea White or Jeffrey White. If you are over 18 and would like to help out with future events, please contact one of the above as well.

Meet the Wardens

Featuring short information spotlights on the new Wardens at Christ Church to help us get to know each other better. Please stay tuned for future profiles from other new Wardens.

Paul Wren (Deputy People’s Warden)

Paul Wren was born in Toronto and educated at Brebeuf College School in Willowdale and later at U of T before receiving his B. Ed. degree at Queen's in 1978. He taught at Don Bosco and Upper Canada College in Toronto before moving to Brampton in 1981. He is recently divorced and lives with his two daughters, Andrea (23) and Elizabeth (19). The family initially attended St. James the Apostle Church in Peel Village, where both girls were christened. Paul served on the Church Advisory Committee and was Co-Director of the Sunday School programme for 3 years.

Due to the age limit in the Youth Group at St.James, the family joined the congregation at Christ Church in 2002. Andrea and Elizabeth were both confirmed at the Christ Church and were also servers for three years. For the past 2½ years, Andrea has been working in Attendant Care for the March of Dimes. Elizabeth, who has a Diploma in Food Preparation, is currently job hunting.

Paul is on his second term as Deputy People’s Warden, having already served for two years in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, as a member of the Corporation, he was appointed People’s Warden, a position he held for a period of two years. He was also on the Search Committee prior to Rev. Byron becoming Rector. In conjunction with Rev. Michael, Paul has dedicated much time to the Youth Group and to Confirmation Preparation Classes. Also a member of the Property Committee, he is enthusiastic about the newly renovated C. Allan Johnson Auditorium. In addition, Paul continues as a Sidesman, a role he has performed over the last seven years.

In September, Paul began his 34th year of teaching, his 32nd year at Georgetown District High School. He is presently Head of the Math & French Department. He is an avid reader, and also enjoys baseball, hockey and scuba diving.

Paul usually attends the 10:45 am service.

At the end of June, the Parish Group hosted their annual Strawberry Social. This was a great success as they changed their format and held the event on a Sunday after the 10:00 am service. Besides the good eats, the event raised $700 for outreach and Parish Ministry.

Besides the pictures below, you can also watch a youTube video of this event at this URL: http://goo.gl/UtBjO

Colours in the Storm

Mark your Calendars

In the spring a cast of members from the Arts and letters club in Toronto performed the musical play Colours in the Storm, to enthusiastic audiences who clamored to hear more.

Christ Church is pleased to remount the Arts and Letters Club, Toronto, production of Colours in the Storm, a musical play about the mysterious death of one of Canada’s most famous painters, Tom Thomson, in 1917 in Algonquin Park.

The play, written and scored by the talented director, composer, Jim Betts, contains both haunting and at times lively, cheeky music. It will have the audience wondering just who might have killed Tom Thomson, or was his death an accident or suicide?

Don’t miss the chance to come and decide for yourself as you enjoy the music. Mark your calendars for a great evening and an excellent cause in supporting Our Place Peel, helping homeless and at risk youth in our region.

Date and Time: Saturday, October 22nd, at 7:30 pm

Ticket Price: $20.00 includes refreshments after the show

Holy Humour

A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses."

When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation."

---

A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.

"Reverend," said the young man, "I'm so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip."

The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business."

Handel’s Messiah

Georgetown Bach Chorale

The Georgetown Bach Chorale’s Brampton debut will be Handel’s timeless oratorio offered by Georgetown’s own Baroque choir complete with orchestra led from the harpsichord by its artistic director, Ron Greidanus. Even though this marvelous work is known for its familiar arias and choruses, there is nothing ordinary about this presentation. The Bach Chorale takes a truly historical approach to Handel’s greatest masterpiece. Proceeds from the Christ Church performance will be directed to local community outreach.

Date and Time: Friday, November 18th, at 8:00 pm

Ticket Price: $30.00, students $10.00

The Pastor’s Cat

Have you heard the story about the pastor who had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down? The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc., but the kitten would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten.

That's what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke, the tree went "boing!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air-out of sight.

The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went on about his business.

A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, "Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?"

She replied, "You won't believe this," and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, "Well, if God gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it.” She continued, "I watched my child go out into the backyard, get down on her knees to pray, and, really, Pastor, if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, a kitten suddenly came flying out of the clear blue sky and landed right in front of her!"

Courier Contributions Request

We occasionally print general items submitted from someone in the congregation. These items are welcomed and will be used as space and relevance allows. If you feel a calling to do this, please do not hesitate to submit it.

We would also like to see more group updates from around the Parish. In a given year, many groups are only made reference to in the annual Vestry Report. Some groups only appear in the bulletin once in a while when there is an event they are having.

Please reflect on your group’s ability to add one or two items a year to The Courier. Even better would be submitting information for all four editions in a year. Then we can all keep up to date on the various groups available to us in our Parish.

Quotations

Do you have a favourite quotation of a religious or spiritual nature? If you would like to see it in The Courier, please send it to us. Please be sure to quote the source.

The Courier Schedule

There are four editions of The Courier published every year. Due to the publishing dates being tied to four major church events the exact publishing dates move every year. If you have any doubt about the publishing dates or submission deadlines, please use the following as a guide.
